Like me, every longboard rider loves downhill because they can feel the speed of longboarding by this way. So, what about you? Hope, you are also like downhill. But if you are a beginner and want to enjoy this riding style you must need to learn it first. But be careful, longboarding is an enjoyable ride but it is risky too. You can get a severe injury for any little unconsciousness. Besides, downhill is riskier because you will ride with the fastest speed than any other riding style. So, it is essential for you to know the exact and secure processes of riding downhill on a longboard. In this article, I’m going to help you learn how to ride downhill on a longboard. So, read this article attentively and don’t miss any part.
Should I need any special longboard for downhill purpose?
Tighten your longboard’s back truck than the front truck. This set up will help you to reduce wobble. But, you can’t get smooth turns if you tighten the trucks so hard.
Which type of protective gears should I need?
Safety is very important for skateboarding or longboarding. Especially, you must need to look after about your safety for riding downhill because you will ride with an extra speed and remember one thing-“more speed, more risk”. Because it is little difficult to control and balance at high speed. So, you need all type of safety gears like a helmet, slide gloves, wrist and ankle guards, knee and elbow pad, shin guards, padded short and upper body armor. Skipping any of them will not be a better idea. But if you skip any then ride at your own risk. But don’t go without a helmet, slide gloves, knee and elbow pads.
Using a regular helmet for downhill is not a better idea. Wear a full face helmet to protect your chin and face. This type of helmet will also protect your eyes from the air.
You are ready to ride now
Have you set up your longboard for downhill? Have you geared up with the protective gears? If the answer is true then you are ready to ride. Now, follow the steps bellow to ride downhill:
STEP one: Go to the top of the heel
Go to the top of the hill with your longboard and place it on the ground. If it is your very first downhill ride, choose a gentle slope so you can ride with a fair speed to control the longboard smoothly.
STEP two: Stand on the deck and push to ride
Now, stand on your deck and give one or more push to roll the board. Generally, most people use their back foot for pushing. Maintain a gentle speed and don’t go too fast until you get the stance.
STEP three: Get the stance
After getting a fair speed, place your foot back on the deck which you have used for pushing. Keep about 2 feet distance between the front and back foot and keep the back foot lower than the front. Stay kneel and put your hand on your back like the rider bellow. It is the most accurate stance for downhill which is used by most people. Plus, this stance has few benefits. It provides better control, comfort, and safety even at the highest speed.
Make sure to keep much pressure on your front foot to reduce speed wobble to stay safe from any accident.
STEP four: Stopping or braking
Footbrake is the simplest way for stopping of breaking. But it is not a better idea to stop the board at a high speed. If you want to brake with your foot, first slightly drag your foot on the ground to reduce the speed. After reducing the speed you can stop the longboard by dragging your foot on the ground.
Except this method, there are few different ways to stop or brake a longboard. The methods are - heel slide, tail slide, and bailing. There is another article where we’ve described the braking methods broadly.
